Vintage Disneyana: Truly Magical Finds
Those who are so passionate about vintage Disneyana may find a difficulty finding them in art auctions, as only very few of these items are being featured and held for sale. But as they say, nothing is too difficult especially if you really want to have something. If you happen to find a vintage Disneyana or an assortment of it in art auctions, you might as well consider it as your badge of pride.
Vintage Disneyana items carry a whimsical, grandiose touch to it. It can come in figurines or paintings. Watches are the most common vintage Disneyana items that you can find in art auctions.
One of vintage Disneyana’s most expensive items are old Disneyland maps. These maps are usually hard to find in art auctions and do not come in good form, if there were. The map of Disneyland, which was made in 1958, was said to be the nicest looking among the rest of the old maps available. This was also the first to be poster sized. This map, which was stored unfolded and rolled, garnered many lots when it was held for auction on that day alone. The winner walked away with this map way more than two thousand dollars happier and richer.
A few years ago, an art auction featured an adorable Kickerbocker Mickey Mouse clad in a Santa costume. This vintage Disneyana creation is considered as an extraordinary find not only because it was made in 1938 but because it came with a history as well. It was a rare Mickey Mouse toy made by Knickerbocker for a department store that was intended for a contest during the Christmas season. This item had a beard made out of genuine wool fur. It also had some fine crazing on its face, but had no flakes in the paint though.
Another art auction also featured a 1951 Mad Hatter china teapot made by Regal for Disney. This teapot is a fascinating vintage Disneyana that instantly gives you the ‘Alice in Wonderland’ feel.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs vintage Disneyanas can also be found in some art auctions. An art auction showcased this item in the form of figurines that was created in the 1950s. However, it only had Snow White and six dwarfs. Sneezy was the missing dwarf in the item. There was also a pretty Bambi figurine at a vintage Disneyana auction. A particular painting, which was an original creation for a Disney holiday card, was made in 1949 illustrating the Cinderella castle. The painting was held for auction and sold for four thousand dollars.
A recent art auction featured many different autographed items that included Disney items. Among the signed vintage Disneyana items were Walt Disney, conductor Leopold Stokowski and two original animators, Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnson. There was even an autographed Fantasia album as well.
It would be recommended to be a little nosey about events that would auction off vintage Disneyanas as there are some art auctions that surprisingly do not advertise them because if they did, more people would attend the auction. Take for example an unadvertised art auction that held a 1930s Mickey Mouse lamp and lampshade for sale. Because there was no competition, the item was sold for five hundred dollars.
